Fun Ways to Celebrate Fall With Your Senior

By 4  pm On

Elder Care in Ashburn VAIt’s officially Fall, the season best known for its magnificent colors, decadent desserts, and amazing scents that are sure to get you in the mood for a cup of hot cocoa by the fire or a great book and your favorite slippers.

If your senior parent or loved one is receiving elder care in their home, Fall is a great time of year to get them out of the house so that they can experience all of the beauty that this season has to offer before the air gets too cold or dry to enjoy, but there are plenty of ways to celebrate at home, too.

If the darker evenings and cooler temperatures start creeping in and you are looking for some fun ways to spend time with your senior and break up the monotony of elder care, here are some ideas to consider:

Bake together.

There’s something comforting and relaxing about baking with your loved ones, especially if you can use an old family recipe that you senior is sure to appreciate. There are so many good seasonal flavors in abundance this time of year, between pumpkin and cinnamon and pecans and pomegranates, try baking both an old and a new recipe with the senior in your life!

Foliage tour.

Now is the time of year when the leaves start changing colors and the Summer shades of bright green turn to Fall shades of beautiful reds, yellows, and oranges. A good way to spend quality time with your senior without the interruptions or distractions of their daily elder care routine is to take a drive to see the colors that the season has so generously provided for our viewing pleasure. Taking a drive is a way to have good communication with your loved one, so ask them about their past or allow them to guide the conversation to whatever makes them happy. You’ll be making memories that are invaluable.

Carve pumpkins.

When we think about carving pumpkins, usually children come to mind, but why? There’s no reason that without some supervision and guidance, your senior parent or loved one can’t enjoy the act of picking, designing, and then helping to carve a pumpkin of their very own.
Just be sure that you or a caregiver handles the sharp tools, and wait to see their face light up, along with their jack-o-lantern, when they are done!

For some seniors that are unable to get out of their home very often, they can feel like they are missing out. Consider helping your loved one bring the colors of Fall inside by placing decorations where they can see them every day. It’s a small way that you can help lessen feelings of isolation and allow them to enjoy the season from the comfort of their very own home. Bonus points if you let them create it! There are tons of craft ideas online, or your senior might have an idea of their own.

The days can fly by, so don’t let Fall escape without taking some time to enjoy it with the special senior in your life!
